Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is actually a dental cosmetic procedure where a composite resin material is bonded on the tooth using a special light. This material will be selected to match the colour of your teeth so that it looks natural and blends with the other existing teeth. This procedure is meant to create the perfect set of teeth for that perfect smile.

When Does Dental Bonding Become Necessary

If you have any of the following conditions and feel that it affects your smile or makes you feel uncomfortable when in the company of others, then dental bonding could be an option for you to rectify the problem :
  1. Decayed teeth
  2. Gap between your teeth
  3. Discoloured teeth
  4. Uneven shaped teeth
  5. Cracked or chipped teeth
  6. If you have amalgam fillings that are obvious
  7. If the root of the tooth is exposed due to receding gums

What Will Your Dentist Do

Once you have discussed with your dentist regarding undergoing dental bonding treatment, your dentist will explain the procedure to you to give you an idea of what will take place :
  1. Pre Procedure – unless the procedure is for filling a decayed tooth, anaesthesia is not necessary. Your dentist will then pick out a composite resin colour that best matches your teeth to give it a natural look
  2. Bonding Procedure – the surface of the tooth will first be abraded so that the bonding material will stick to the teeth. The resin is then applied in layers and your dentist will proceed to mould and shape it to the correct shape. The material is then hardened using a laser beam or ultraviolet light after every layer has been applied. Once the material is bonded to the teeth, your dentist will again sculpture the material to shape it and polished to resemble the rest of the teeth.

The entire procedure could take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour for each tooth. Make sure that you practice good oral hygiene to ensure that the bonding material lasts for at least 3 to 10 years before any touch up is needed.

Staining can still occur, but this can be easily rectified with a quick polish by your dentist.

Of all the dental cosmetic surgeries, dental bonding is one of the most affordable procedures and to top it all, it only takes one visit to the dentist to get a beautiful smile.
